Most of us know the story of Joseph. It is a fascinating story chock full of family drama, temptation, jealousy, betrayal, strength, courage and ultimately renewal and restoration. (Genesis chapters 37-50)
There is one part of the story in particular I would like to talk about today. At this point in the story, Joseph had already been betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery and then even thrown into prison. And btw, he was an innocent man! But God’s favor remained with him. We never see Joseph turn to God and say, “Why are you doing this to me?” or “Lord, how could you let this all happen to me?” Instead, he remained faithful and trusted who he knew God to be. Ultimately, he was rewarded a hundred fold for his loyalty.
Anyhow, there are many twists and turns throughout this tumultuous story but I want to bring your attention to what Joseph said when he found himself face to face with Pharaoh (from prison to being in front of Pharaoh...whoa). He was being asked to interpret a dream. However, in Genesis 41:16 we hear Joseph's reply. He said,” I cannot do it...but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”
Did you catch it?
This has quickly become one of my favorite spoken words in the Bible. But God.
I am afraid, BUT GOD can give me perfect peace.
I am sick, BUT GOD is my healer.
I am weak, BUT GOD is strong.
I am a victim, BUT GOD has made me a conqueror.
I am broken, BUT GOD has made me whole.
I am confused, BUT GOD has granted me wisdom.
I am tired, BUT GOD can give me energy.
I am angry, BUT GOD will give me joy.
I am… But God…
What are you struggling with? I am… say the words. Then turn to his Word, his beautiful promises and replace it with what you know God to be. Replace it with what you know God can grant you. Then take it to him and declare it in prayer and conversation. Repent of your I am and allow space for HIM.
Look to the example of Joseph and be encouraged that if he could face the adversity, betrayal, lies, hatred, loneliness, fear and so much more and never turn his back on God, surely we are able. Declare it today. BUT GOD!!!
