Everyday vs. Emergency
“Take God out of the ‘Emergency Only’ box and allow him into your every day.”
Have you ever heard that saying? I don’t know where I heard it but I had it written down and I think it is a powerful statement. When Jesus came to the earth, he demonstrated his desire for deep, meaningful connection and friendship with us, which in itself displays the desire of our Father. However, we must continue to remind ourselves that God is not our private genie, sitting around waiting for us to come to him when we have wishes we would like to be granted or need help getting out of a jam.
Revelation 3:15-16 says, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Sounds to me that if we don’t make a choice, that in itself IS a choice, but unfortunately not a very good one. We cannot expect to live our lives our own way, disregarding God’s ways and think we can just show up whenever it suits us and expect God to jump.
Yes, he will move the mountains to bring you to repentance and save you. Yes, he will celebrate you coming home to him when you truly love and choose him. Psalm 91:14 reminds us that, "Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him..." So yes, he will even rescue us when we need him. But he sees deep into our hearts and knows our inner motives. There is NO manipulating God. There is no out-maneuvering him, either. We cannot love God only when it is convenient for us and turn away when we are busy with life. God is not our “In Case Of Emergency Call…” Either we are for him or we are against him. Either we love him or we don't. It really is that cut and dry.
The Bible even says that the Lord is a “jealous God.” He is not jealous OF us, he is jealous FOR us. As HIS creation, he gets jealous and angry when we serve any other “gods.” (Exodus 34:14) That word “god” is spelled with a small “g” meaning it is something we are making our idle and in turn our earthly “god” in place of our Almighty God, of which there is only one! By creating us, he has earned the right to our love, loyalty and honor but he will never force us to choose him. But we must be aware that if we do not choose him, the consequences are ours to bear.
Sometimes, we need to simply acknowledge the obvious and place our back against the wall to see where we stand- and in this case, for WHOM we stand? I encourage you to think long and hard about where you have placed God in your life. If he is not first, adjustments need to be made before it’s too late. Call out to him with your true desire for repentance and he will NEVER forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5) Call on him with your doubts and fears and he will honor you with truthful answers. The Lord never expects perfection from us but he does expect our honest desire to put him first in our lives and love him above all else.
I encourage you to talk to your Father today. He loves you so much! Take the time to open your Bible and get to know your him and watch as he blesses you exceedingly and abundantly, above and beyond in both this life AND the next. (Ephesians 3:20) Stay encouraged!
