In the blink of an eye

I feel prompted to share with you a very personal truth. We have lost two people in my extended family to suicide. Although each was from a different side of my family and had never even met each other, both came to the same conclusion at a certain point in their life, that circumstances were just too hard and painful to endure for even one more day. This decision shattered lives of those closest to them in ways too deep and intimate to even put into words. I don’t judge or blame either of them for their decision, because fact of the matter is… I did not walk a day in their shoes and couldn’t see into their minds. I don’t claim to understand what could have been happening in which ALL hope was truly lost. I personally felt hurt, angry and sad at different moments after finding out, but ultimately all I could do is leave it in God’s hands and pray for those they left behind.

It makes me think back to some of my darkest days. What really got me through? Deep down, I have always held tightly to the idea that you just never know what tomorrow can bring. One year, one month, one week, one day and sometimes just one moment away can bring life altering changes that we never could even think to anticipate. During the hardest times in my life when I found myself a single, struggling, abandoned teenage mother, I am thankful that I never experienced a complete loss of hope. I had survived some of life’s cruelest fates and didn’t know what to do or where to turn.

There were days where putting one foot in front of the other seemed an impossible task, a good night sleep was a cruel and elusive stranger and even digesting a bite of food took concentrated and determined effort. Hope, happiness and blessings seemed reserved for others more deserving. Days, weeks and months blurred into a dark abyss and my body just felt numb. But somehow… deep inside I just knew if I kept trying there had to be a change ahead. Life just couldn’t be that cruel. And you know what I found out? Life can actually be very beautiful. Sometimes it takes longer for some of us to find our purpose, our way and ultimately- our joy. But it is there, I promise!

I would like to give these words of encouragement to anyone out there that may be finding hope harder and harder to hold on to. Hope is not a tangible item. Hope is found in faith rooted in our minds and hearts which is planted and cultivated from God's holy word. We must dig as deep as humanly possible to find a shred of faith and approach our loving Heavenly Father and request for Him to multiply that "mustard seed". (Matthew 17:20) Ask God to give you supernatural ability to go on for another day and for Him to make His mighty presence known in your heart and soul. Boldly pray His word back to Him from 1 Peter 5:10: “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

He will restore you! Retrain your mind to know and anticipate that in just the blink of an eye, everything truly can get better. God cannot tell a lie. Isaiah 43:18 says, “FORGET THE FORMER THINGS. DO NOT DWELL ON THE PAST. SEE, I AM DOING A NEW THING.” I capitalized those words so you didn’t miss it. He was speaking to the Israelites at that time. He was showing a nation of disobedient people that continued to turn their backs on Him (sometimes in the most abhorrent ways), He was showing them mercy and promising them that He was going to be doing a new thing. This is in the Bible as an example to us so that we never doubt His mercy. His ability. His desire to do a new thing in us, no matter the situation, no matter the past.

If you back up just a few verses and look at verse 11, He declares, “I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from me there is no savior.” He is our SAVIOR! He can make all things new, even in the darkest days of our life. He wants to help you and save you from your situation. Trust Him, please. How do you trust Him? Follow the words of Proverbs 3:5,6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.”

We can’t do this on our own. We can’t depend on our own understanding. We must get in His word and submit ALL of our ways to Him. He promises to straighten your path and save you, friend. I am saying a special prayer today for anyone out there today finding themselves in a desperate situation, to come to know and experience the love of the Lord. May the peace of God be with you. Don’t give up!
