The ultimate lifeguard
Psalm 34:18 - “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
When I was a kid, my older brother was a lifeguard. I vividly remember the training and testing he had to go through to qualify to be a lifeguard at a busy city public pool. He had to be able to hold his breath and tread water for insanely long periods of time. He had to be able to swim a certain amount of laps back and forth and so much more. Needless to say, he was in optimal shape. He passed all his tests and became a lifeguard! I never told him this but I was so proud of him when I saw him swaggering around the crowded pool with his gear in hand, or sitting regally in his life chair in his lifeguard uniform.
Being a lifeguard is just one example of a job where someone has the potential to ultimately save a person's life who is in danger or distress. Their job is to stay alert and watch intently for possible signs of trouble and then jump in and save when it becomes necessary. They scan the area carefully and constantly. In fact, at beaches lifeguards even use binoculars to keep a close eye on those far away.
When I look at this scripture mentioned above from Psalm, I think of a lifeguard. You and I have the ultimate life saver standing on deck at full attention, waiting to attend to us in our distress. Just as the scripture mentions, Jesus is CLOSE to you. He is ready to jump in and SAVE you when you are brokenhearted or crushed in spirit. Call out to Him! Your feelings matter to Him. Your tears matter. Your confusion matters. Your frustration… matters!
Jesus is the best lifesaver we could possibly ask for. He came to this earth to save us. He literally gave His life so we could live. He taught us the way, and willingly suffered and died for you and I. His move has been made. The next move is ours. He is here to escort us through every step of our life if we just trust Him. But this is especially important when we are at our weakest. He has the power to make us strong. He has the power to do literally... anything we need!
Isaiah chapter 61 is a phenomenal chapter of the Bible to read when your soul needs to be refreshed or when you are feeling crushed in spirit. I will give you a couple of verses that are my favorite from this chapter but I encourage you to read the entire chapter when you can.
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me… to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners… to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor…
Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance… and everlasting joy will be yours… I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God.”
Did you catch it?
Beauty from ashes!
Praise instead of despair!
Righteous and rejoicing!
I pray that regardless of where you are in your journey with the Lord at this time, that right now, today you will have the courage to say yes to Jesus and be saved. He loves you more than you can ever imagine!
