Treasure Hunt

Imagine this if you will…

It’s a sunny, glorious summer day and you are on your highly anticipated vacation at the beach. As you walk in the warm, soft sand you start to take notice of all the beauty around you. The warmth permeating your skin made possible by the bright, flaming sun. The sound of the waves rolling in and at times even crashing in with thunderous authority- demanding your senses to take notice. You hear kids playing and laughing, a dog barking and seagulls screaming out to one another as they find remnants of food to feast upon.

And then your eyes catch a twinkle in the sand that seems out of place. You look again, thinking the brightness of the sun is playing tricks on your eyes but no…there it is again. A subtle but noticeable shimmer. You pick up your pace to get closer and investigate. Once upon it, you bend down and reach into the sand to pick it up and you cannot believe your eyes! It’s a gold coin. It looks to be hundreds of years old. You wrap your palm around it and find yourself standing back up slowly and in awe you start looking around. Has anybody noticed what you just found? Gold!!

You plan to walk back to your beach chair and have already decided to get your phone and Google how to find someone or something to tell you more about this coin when… your eye catches another shimmer. “No way…” you hear yourself whisper. You calmly and deliberately walk over and sure enough…ANOTHER COIN! Ok, well now you get seriously excited. What exactly is going on???

After retrieving the second coin, you find yourself walking with a steely, squinted glare. There is treasure underneath the sand in this beach and you are going to find as many coins as you possibly can. After finding about a fist full of gold coins, you think to yourself that maybe, just maybe there is a treasure box somewhere out in the water that almost washed up, when a crashing wave must have broken it open. So, your plan is to walk the beach back and forth until you find as many coins as you can. In fact, maybe you can go buy a metal detector…surely that will help. Then, before the sun goes down, you plan to rent some snorkeling gear and get out into the ocean and check the ocean floor. If that doesn’t pan out, you will plan to scuba dive first thing in the morning.

Wouldn’t that be just about how it would go if you had found this treasure? You would surely make a plan and search for it. You may call in friends or family to help you search. You would certainly not just take the one coin and ignore all the other shimmers of light that you see. You would get excited and search and search and search. You would want to find the origin of the treasure, which would surely house the bulk of it.

Well, truth be told… God has prepared and has made readily available a glorious treasure for each and every one of us! This treasure is better than any silver or gold we could find and accumulate on Earth. This treasure will give us a better quality of life right now and in fact, ultimately save our very souls. This treasure offers us eternity! This treasure offers freedom! This treasure offers peace and joy and lasting happiness! This treasure is filled with more beauty than anyone could ever articulate. This treasure is customized to your life and mine. It gives us more than we could ever imagine, and it is right in front of you. Right. Now.

The Lord shows us the shimmers in the sand, but it is our job to walk over, grab it and hang on tight. We must intentionally focus and search for this hidden treasure! How do we search for the hidden treasures of God’s kingdom? It all starts with prayer. Talk to God about your desire to be rich with knowledge and truth. Petition Him to give you wisdom, patience, endurance and clarity. Quote scriptures as you pray. David has the most beautiful prayers in Psalms that you can recite and adjust to be your own personal prayer. Praise Him all throughout the day with songs and gratitude.

Set aside time to dive head first into the Bible. My opinion is to start with Psalms then jump over to Matthew and keep going. Start researching other Bible based publications to dig deeper. Get on your knees and humble yourself before your Creator. Ask God to present opportunities to you and give you the vision to see how you can show your fellow human beings what the love of Jesus Christ looks like.

Every step you take closer to God, he will entrust you with a piece of this treasure. You will have supernatural calm, joy, ability, patience, wisdom and a deep-rooted happiness that no life circumstance can take from you. You will have the hidden treasure of the kingdom if you just search for it. That kind of wealth is better than all the gold in the world!

Isaiah 45:3 – I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

Proverbs 2:4-5 - …and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

Matthew 6: 19-21 - …but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 13:44 – The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field…

Colossians 3: 2-3 - …in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
