When I was a kid, we used to play a game called Red Light, Green Light. One kid would go down the field and the rest of the group of kids would be on the other side of the field. The single kid would shout “Green Light!” With that command, the group would take off, running as fast as they could toward that commander. However, at any given moment the command for “Red Light” could be ordered, in which you had to stop immediately or you were out. The goal was to see who could make it all the way and become the next commander. I was always really good at that silly game.
As I was thinking about what to blog about today, that game came to mind. Random right?!?! Well, for myself at least, it seems that for many years, at the beginning of my faith walk, I was always on the lookout for God to give me a red light (STOP) or green light (GO). However, in the last couple of years, I have come to truly appreciate the unspoken often unrecognized, yellow light. It’s in this “yellow light” time when I feel like I am on a leisurely stroll, hand in hand with the Lord. He tells me to live in peace but “proceed with caution,” as it is important to always remain alert. However, during this “yellow light” time, my soul is not yearning or striving, I am simply… proceeding with life.
In these moments, I continue to be dialed into the Lord with heartfelt prayer, worship and praise, continued Bible reading, quiet meditation and time spent with other Christ followers (Proverbs 27:17). I calm myself from constantly being on high alert for the next big thing God has in store for me. I take one step at a time, one day at a time - not lagging behind and not rushing ahead of the Lord, simply submitting to His perfect will and timing.
It’s during this “yellow light” period when God continues to shape my character, grow my integrity and develop my ministry. Usually this is done with small hurdles, little tests and gentle promptings from the Holy Spirit. God uses this time to build my relationship with Him and those around me. Although this “yellow light” time seems uneventful for the most part, some of God’s greatest work is being accomplished in me during that time. Retrospect has proven that every single time.
So today I wanted to simply bring this “yellow light” period into focus. I would encourage you identify the stage you are in at this time of your life? Red? Yellow? Green?
If you are finding yourself in a “yellow light” stage, please be aware to not to get spiritually lazy during this period. This time is not meant to be a time to coast. We need to stay rooted and connected to the Lord and aware of where He is in our day. Every moment matters. The fact is, we sin every day of our lives and yet, lovingly we are given God’s beautiful grace every day of our lives as well. May we learn to pause and ask God where He is in our day... in this very moment. Courageously ask Him, “Lord, what are you working IN me today? THROUGH me today? FOR me today?” And then gratefully praise Him for the “yellow light” times in your life.
God will continue to mold you and make you beautiful in every way and allow you to see and appreciate the beauty that really is all around you. Feel free to check out this song by Francesca Battistelli: Beautiful, Beautiful https://youtu.be/JbCfyZHSQbE and stay encouraged!
